This mayo-free tuna salad went viral on Tik Tok, and at first I was a little suprised.
It’s a salad I’ve been making for years, and it’s made with simple ingredients that many people have right in their kitchen. But then it made sense.
This tuna salad relies on lots of bright and briny flavors, has the perfect amount of crunch, and is a refreshing change from the mayo-based tuna salad we all know so well. I still love a good mayo-based tuna, but this one is the one I make the most. I’m so excited to share it with you!
“What else can I use?”
- My favorite tuna is made by Genova (I get it at Costco). It’s great quality and packed in olive oil. You can use any tuna that you love!
- If you don’t have pepperoncini, you can simply leave them out and add an extra splash of vinegar to the salad.
- I call for red wine vinegar, but you can use white wine or apple cider vinegar if that’s what you have.
The Best Mayo-Free Tuna Salad
- 4 cans good quality Yellowfin or albacore tuna, drained
- 1/2 cup white or red onion, diced I soak mine for 10 minutes in water to mellow the flavor
- 3 stalks celery, diced
- 6 peperoncini peppers, sliced thin
- 2 tbsp capers, rinsed and minced
- 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 tbsp dijon mustard
- 1/3 cup peperoncini brine
- 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- Kosher salt, to taste
- bri Fresh cracked pepper, to taste
- In a large bowl, combine drained tuna, onion, celery, peppers, capers, and parsley. Mix briefly.
- Add in the dressing ingredients: mustard, brine, vinegar, olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Mix to combine and taste. Add more salt if needed.
- Serve on a salad, sandwich, or scooped up with tortilla chips or crackers.
